In a recent study on how often medication mistakes are made during surgical procedures, in-house researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital found that errors were made in nearly 50 percent of the operations they analyzed. Out of 277 surgeries, researchers documented 124 medication errors or adverse drug events, nearly 80 percent of which were determined to have been entirely preventable. The severity of the errors ranged from “significant” to “serious,” with some potentially life-threatening errors reported.
