Did Meridia Cause You Harm?
Americans have been struggling with their weight for years, which is why many of them have turned to weight loss drugs such as Meridia to assist them with their weight loss efforts. When faced with the health risks associated with obesity, many people opt for a prescription weight-loss drug instead of facing high blood pressure, obesity, high cholesterol among other dangerous health conditions linked to being overweight.
Meridia is one of the popular weight loss medications that were prescribed by medical professionals to treat obesity. Generally prescribed to patients more than thirty pounds overweight, Abbott Laboratories enjoyed the success of the drug until March of 2002, when the Italian Health Ministry suspended sales of Meridia. Shortly thereafter, other countries grew concerned that perhaps their own consumers were experiencing adverse effects after taking the weight loss drug. If you were injured by Meridia, our Tampa product liability lawyers at The Florida Law Group may be able to help.
Consumer Advocacy Group Urges Recall
Public Citizen, a consumer advocacy group petitioned the FDA to recall Meridia in the United States after twenty-nine heart-related deaths were linked to Meridia. Public Citizen’s pleas were joined by more than 397 other reports made to the FDA citing adverse reactions from taking the wonder drug. In August 2005, the FDA declined Public Citizen’s petition, allowing medical professionals to continue prescribing Meridia in the United States.
Meridia is associated with a number of side effects including:
- Dry mouth
- Increased blood pressure
- Increased heart rate
- Dry mouth
- Increased sweating
FDA Announces Voluntary Recall
On October 8, 2010, the FDA and Abbott Laboratories made a public announcement claiming that they were voluntarily recalling Meridia. The recall was initiated due to the drug’s links to severe and potentially fatal heart conditions such as heart attack and stroke. Perhaps some people felt this recall was too little too late. Medical professionals were advised to stop prescribing the dangerous drug and use alternative methods for helping their patients address obesity.
